Distinguished Lecture Series "Hong Kong as a Global Financial Center: Charting the Future " by Professor KC Chan

On May 10, 2024, the Institute of Development Economics at Macau University of Science and Technology (M.U.S.T.) hosted the Distinguished Lecture Series in the D Hall Auditorium at 3:00 pm. Professor KC Chan, former dean of the School of Business at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, delivered the keynote speech. The university invited local finance, economics, and policy research experts and scholars to participate in a round-table discussion. The event aims to promote a greater understanding of local finance, economics, and policy research through high-quality academic lectures and discussions.

Leaders from M.U.S.T. and distinguished guests attended the event, including Chair Professor Joseph Hun-wei LEE, Vice-Chancellor and President of M.U.S.T., Ms. Leong Man Ngan, Director of Research and Statistics Department from Monetary Authority of Macao, CEO Du Miaomiao of the Macau Development Bank, Professor Sheng Ni, Dean of the School of Business of M.U.S.T., Chair Professor Francis T Lui of the Institute of Development Economics of M.U.S.T., Chair Professor So Jacky Yuk Chow of the School of Business of M.U.S.T., Associate Professor Lin Yongjia, Director of the Department of Accounting and Finance of the School of Business of M.U.S.T., and others. Nearly 400 participants attended the lecture, including local experts, scholars in finance, economics, and policy research fields, as well as teachers and students from M.U.S.T, which made the event lively and engaging.

Chair Professor Joseph Hun-wei LEE, the Vice-Chancellor and President of M.U.S.T., warmly welcomed the experts, scholars, and guests who attended the event and expressed his heartfelt gratitude to them. During his keynote speech titled "Hong Kong's Future as a Global Financial Center", Professor KC Chan shared his valuable insights. Professor Chan emphasized that investors’ confidence is Hong Kong's most valuable asset and that Hong Kong, as an international financial center, has a bright and promising future.

The roundtable discussion was moderated by Chair Prof. Francis T Lui, and the guests participating in the discussion included Professor KC Chan, CEO Du Miaomiao, and Chair Professor So Jacky Yuk Chow. They discussed relevant issues such as the development prospects of China, Hong Kong, Macau, and other regions in international finance in-depth. The lecture ended with an interactive Q&A session and received warm applause from the audience.

Professor Chan Ka-Keung Ceajer is an academic and financial expert. He currently serves as an adjunct professor and senior advisor to the dean of Business School the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He is also the chairman of the board of directors of WeLab Bank, a leading financial technology company in Asia and one of the first virtual bank operators in Hong Kong.

Prior to his current roles, Professor Chan served as Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury of the Hong Kong SAR Government from July 2007 to June 2017. Before joining the government, he was the dean of the School of Business of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Professor Chan was one of the key figures in building the Kellogg-HKUST Executive MBA program (KH EMBA), a joint venture between the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in the United States. As of 2023, in the EMBA program rankings of the Financial Times, it has ranked first in the world 12 times.

Professor Chan has also held various important public offices, including Chairman of the Consumer Council, Director of the Hong Kong Futures Exchange, Member of the Strategic Development Committee, and Member of the Hong Kong Academic Accreditation Council. He has also served as Chairman of the Asia Pacific Finance Association and Chairman of the Asia Pacific Association of Business Schools.

Professor Chen holds a bachelor's degree in economics from Wesleyan University in the United States, a master's degree in business administration, and a doctorate in philosophy in finance from the University of Chicago. His expertise lies in the study of asset pricing, trading strategy evaluation, and market efficiency, and he has published numerous related papers.
