The Institute of Development Economics at Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) will host the Distinguished Lecture Series on March 26, 2025, at 3:00 PM in D Hall. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of our university, we have specially invited Professor Cheng Kwok Hon, Leonard, an internationally renowned economist, former President of Lingnan University in Hong Kong, and former Dean of the HKUST Business School, to deliver a keynote speech. He will discuss the RMB Internationalization and its impact on the Hong Kong dollar and Macau Pataca. The University has also invited local practitioners and scholars in finance and economics to participate in a round-table discussion after the lecture. The event aims to promote a greater understanding of the global monetary system through high-quality academic lectures and discussions.
Professor Cheng graduated with a first-class honours Bachelor of Social Sciences degree in economics from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and was awarded an MA and a PhD in economics by the University of California, Berkeley. After teaching at the University of Florida for 12 years, he joined Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in 1992 as one of its founding members. In 1997, the HKUST Business School partnered with the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University to launch Asia's first intercontinental Executive MBA (EMBA) program. This program has been ranked as the world's top Executive MBA program 12 times by the “Financial Times”. Additionally, the full-time Master of Business Administration (MBA) program of HKUST Business School was ranked as the top MBA program in Asia by the “Financial Times” for 2024-2025.
During his tenure as President of Lingnan University in Hong Kong from 2013 to 2023, Professor Cheng dedicated himself to fostering the diverse development of the institution. He particularly advocated for incorporating care and social impact as key focuses of research and actively promoted knowledge transfer initiatives to benefit society. Under his leadership, Lingnan University progressed towards becoming a leading liberal arts university.
