MUST 25th Anniversary Celebration – Lecture of the Distinguished Lecture Series “ RMB Internationalization and the International Monetary System” by Professor Cheng Kwok Hon, Leonard

The Institute of Development Economics (IDE) at Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) hosted the Distinguished Lecture Series - The 25th Anniversary Celebration event on March 26, 2025, at Block D Conference Hall, in collaboration with the School of Business (MSB) at MUST. The keynote speech “RMB Internationalization and the International Monetary System” was delivered by Professor Cheng Kwok Hon, Leonard, Former President of Lingnan University (LU) of Hong Kong and Former Dean of the School of Business and Management of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). The University invited local finance, economics, and entrepreneurs and scholars to participate in a round-table discussion. The event aims to promote a greater understanding of RMB Internationalization through high-quality academic lectures and discussions.

Leaders from MUST and distinguished guests attended the event, including Professor Cheng Kwok Hon, Leonard, Former President of LU of Hong Kong and Former Dean of the School of Business and Management of the HKUST; Dr. Tong Kai Chung, The Executive Council of Macao SAR; Dr. Du Miaomiao, CEO of the Macao Development Bank; Professor Pang Chuan, Vice President of MUST; Professor Sheng Ni, Dean of MSB at MUST; Chair Professor Francis T. Lui, Director of IDE at MUST. In addition, the seminar was attended by key representatives from mainland China and Macao government, research institutions, enterprises, banks, universities, secondary schools, as well as faculty and students from MUST attending the lecture. With over 400 participants, adding brilliance to MUST 25th Anniversary Celebration.

Professor Cheng delivered his keynote speech

During the seminar, Professor Cheng Kwok Hon delivered an insightful presentation on “RMB Internationalization and the International Monetary System.” Professor Cheng elaborated on the background, current status, consensus, and prospects of RMB internationalization. He noted that while significant progress has been made in many aspects, the RMB has not yet reached the status of a key currency in a multipolar international monetary system. He emphasized that the Chinese government should focus on facilitating trade and investment and steadily advancing the internationalization of the RMB in a prudent manner. Professor Cheng also discussed the shortcomings of the existing U.S. dollar-dominated monetary system and the potential directions for reform and evolution of the future international monetary system, receiving high recognition from the attending guests, faculty, and students.

During the roundtable discussion

The panel discussion, moderated by Chair Professor Francis T. Lui, the guests engaged in in-depth exchanges and discussions on topics related to how RMB internationalization could enhance Macao's economy and improve the livelihood of its residents. Participants included Professor Cheng Kwok Hon, CEO Du Miaomiao, Associate Professor Song Yu and Assistant Professor Zhang Fan of MUST MSB. The lecture concluded with an enthusiastic question-and-answer session, followed by a standing ovation from the audience.
